Mariah Carey Graces the Coast
She's the biggest artist to visit the Gold Coast since Whitney Houston shared the bill with Frank Sinatra for The Ultimate Event at the opening of Sanctuary Cove in 1988. Mariah Carey is an undisputable diva among divas -- and not just because of her notorious penchant for the six-star life. (Interesting fact: She owns Marilyn Monroe's white piano). Like them or loathe them, Carey, Celine Dion and the late Houston are renowned as the world's top three divas because of their vocal powers. There's a very good reason Carey has remained at the top of the pack since she released her debut album 22 years ago. She has a five-octave vocal range -- and isn't afraid to use her whistle register! (Interesting fact: The whistle register, also called the flageolet, is the highest register of the human voice, above the modal register and falsetto). Ranked second this year on VH1's 100 Greatest Women in Music list, Carey's voice earned her a place in the Guinness Book Of World Records and the title "songbird supreme" for the highest range of any recorded singer. Carey high note is G#7 -- known as the dolphin squeak. The kind of note that can shatter glass. She has clocked up total album sales of more than 200 million worldwide, a figure that keeps rising every Christmas when new legions of music lovers discover her 1994 Merry Christmas album and single All I Want for Christmas. (Interesting fact: She co-wrote and co-produced the hit track with Walter Afanasieff.) In 1995, Carey made history when her duet with Boyz II Men, One Sweet Day, spent a record 16 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100. The songs remains the longest-running No. 1 in US chart history. The proud owner of more No. 1 US singles than Elvis, Carey's tally of 18 is second only to The Beatles (who have 21) and light years ahead of "pop culture icon" Madonna. She has five Grammy Awards, 17 World Music Awards, 11 American Music Awards and 31 Billboard Music Awards to her credit but unlike Whitney and Celine, Mariah is not only a singer and actress but a songwriter and record producer. Of course, if it looks like a diva, quacks like a diva and walks like a diva, it isn't necessarily a diva. But if it sings like Mariah, well ... it's perhaps the world's greatest living diva. Don't be fooled by the choice of venue for the first show of Mariah Carey's first Australian tour in 15 years. Carey, 42, is playing the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre because Jupiters has subsidised the show (just as Mike Gore did with Whitney and Frank at Sanctuary Cove). If they hadn't, she wouldn't be playing the Gold Coast at all. She's too big a diva, dahlings. Source: Goldcoast.au
Premiere of New Mariah Song: "Bring It On Home"
Mariah Carey has impeccable timing—and not just because she's a musician. Following President Barack Obama's historic reelection last night, the "Vision of Love" diva and Obama booster released a new song online paying poignant tribute to the commander in chief as he gears up for another term in office. The tune, "Bring It on Home," is a slow-moving, soulful ballad that reflects the communal values the president espoused in his soaring acceptance speech and ever since he burst onto the national stage—the idea that America is a better, stronger and more perfect union when we care for our fellow neighbors. "We just everyday people, tryin' to make it through the pain/Yet we intentionally hurt each other playing silly games," sings Carey in the opening verse. "But when it comes down to win or lose, don't give up the fight/cause strength is what we need and love can save our lives." She couldn't have said it any better. Source: E! Online
Mariah Nets 16th #1 on Dance/Club Play Songs Chart
MARIAH CAREY NETS HER 16th #1 DANCE HIT WITH LATEST SINGLE, "TRIUMPHANT (GET 'EM)," ONCE AGAIN CONTINUING TO LEAD ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF NEW MUSIC Multi-platinum global superstar Mariah Carey notches her Sweet 16th #1 hit on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart with her latest single, "Triumphant (Get 'Em)." Mariah's previous #1 hits on the Billboard Dance chart include "Dreamlover," "Fantasy," "Honey," "We Belong Together," "Don't Forget About Us," "Touch My Body," and "Obsessed." "This is another tremendous achievement for Mariah," said Steve Bartels, President & COO, Island Def Jam Music Group. "As one of the world's reigning artists, she continues to set chart records and surpass even her own record-breaking accomplishments. Congratulations to Mariah and to the IDJ staff that worked to bring home this incredible club sensation." Mariah, who will join the judges' panel of FOX's American Idol when the series returns in 2013, boasts an unparalleled music catalog with #1 hits in multiple formats on the Billboard charts. The original version of "Triumphant (Get Em)" feat. Rick Ross and Meek Mill was followed-up with the "Pulse Club Remix" and the "Vintage Throwback Mix," as well as four additional remixes by Laidback Luke, Chus and Ceballos, Danny Verde, and Papercha$er. "I've always had so much fun re-singing my songs for the club/dance mixes," said Mariah. "It gives me the freedom to sing as powerfully as I want and to rewrite the songs specifically for the genre." "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" is the first advance single from five-time Grammy Award®-winner Mariah's 14th studio album, whose release will be announced in the months ahead. The new album follows up Mariah's worldwide multi-million-selling Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel (released September 2009), her multi-platinum E=MC² (2008), and worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (2005). The Emancipation Of Mimi generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemporary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month chart stay. Soundscan's biggest-selling album of 2005, Mimi featured "We Belong Together" (Grammy winner for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song) and "Don't Forget About Us," Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles respectively. They tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's. Three years later, Mariah surpassed Elvis when "Touch My Body" (from E=MC²) became her 18th #1 Hot 100 hit. "Touch My Body" spent two weeks at the top, Mariah's 78th and 79th cumulative career weeks at #1, which tied Elvis' long-standing all-time high of 79 weeks at #1, as calculated by Billboard. Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits. The success of E=MC² brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to more than 200 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the top-selling female recording artist in history. With a distinct five-octave vocal range, prolific songwriting and producing talent, Mariah has defined the modern pop performance. As a singer/songwriter/producer, she has been honored with five Grammy Awards®, nine American Music Awards, Billboard's Artist of the Decade Award, the World Music Award for World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium, and BMI's Icon Award, to name a few. She has two consecutive and unparalleled Billboard Song of the Decade titles: "One Sweet Day" (with Boyz II Men, 1995); and "We Belong Together" (2005), further marking her massive presence on the charts since her 1990 song debut "Vision of Love." Mariah's original holiday classic, "All I Want For Christmas is You," redefined its place in pop culture as one of the greatest holiday hits of all time when it reached #1 on the Billboard charts in 2011, 17 years after its debut. Mariah's influential and stellar contribution to music spans multiple genres and is showcased through her multifaceted hit catalog and a long list of diverse collaborations. Source: IDJMG
Busty ring girl Mariah Carey gets the rounds in
The pop diva plays a boxing ring girl in the promo to her tune Triumphant (Get ‘Em), featuring rappers Rick Ross and Meek Mill.
Eager to show off her toned post-baby belly, Mariah dons a crop top and skirt that displays plenty of firm flesh.
Boasting long curly locks, the singer, 42, ensures she’s the main entertainment in the ring between bouts.
When she’s not seductively holding up number boards, she’s cheering on the fighters alongside chunky hip-hop star Rick.
Triumphant (Get ‘Em) is the first single to be lifted from her upcoming fourteenth album.
Speaking about her new collection, Mariah said: "I'm collaborating with a lot of my favourite people but the main thing is I'm not trying to follow any particular trend.
“I want it to be well received. I want to stay true to myself and the music that I love and make the fans happy.”
Aside from raising her twins Moroccan and Monroe with hubby Nick Cannon, Mariah has been inundated with work of late.
It was announced last month that she’s signed a deal to join the judging panel on American Idol, reportedly netting her around £11million.
However, it’s been claimed that the touchy chart-topper has thrown a strop after learning show bosses also want to add Nicki Minaj to the line-up.
Mariah is allegedly adamant that she be the only woman on the panel, and has called on producers to approach her pal Lenny Kravitz instead.
She wrote on Twitter: What about this combo? :) if we could ever get him to do it!!”
Rocker Lenny replied: “We’ve know each other since we were teenagers. How fun would that be?!”
The singer is also starring in political movie The Butler alongside Forest Whitaker, Robin Williams, Alan Rickman and Jane Fonda.

Glamour girl Mariah Carey is a vision in gold as she jumps into the boxing ring in Triumphant video
It seems Mariah Carey can do no wrong when it comes to her career.
The new American Idol judge, who is currently filming on location for the all-star movie The Butler, has premiered the video for her latest single Triumphant.
And the 42-year-old sizzles in the scenes, taking the part of a glamour girl at a boxing match.
She supports a fighter, rapper Meek Mill who also features on the track, as he fights.
Mariah switches from one clinging gold outfit to another in quick succession, all the better to highlight her toned figure.
Her flat stomach defies the fact that she is the mother of one-year-old twins, Monroe and Morrocan.
The track also features rapper Rick Ross, who stars in the video as a wealthy backer.
It is the first single from Mariah's fourteenth studio album, which is due for release later this year through Island Records.
Triumphant was inspired by Mariah's husband, Nick Cannon, and his struggle with kidney failure earlier this year.
The America's Got Talent host also directed the video.
'It's really about having it succeed, and people are hearing it,' said Mariah's manager, Randy Jackson, in an interview with Billboard.
The track entered the Billboard Dance chart at number 42.
Three different versions of the single were released, Jackson explained, to demonstrate the singer's 'ability to cater to multiple audiences and radio formats.'
Mariah explained how she enjoyed working with Mills and Ross in the video.
'Meek adds an excitement, a newness to the record that is pretty rare right now,' she told MTV online.
'Working with Ross and Meek on the same record was incredible. Obviously, Ross is a star and everybody loves him.
'I'm a fan of his music. I really, really wanted to work with him.
'I love the tone of his voice. I think the contrast of his voice and mine would be something special. I always like to do collaborations that people might think are different.'
The premiere of the video on Vevo was certainly a success with Mariah's devoted fans, who tweeted her their congratulations.
'I left work early so I could be home to watch the video!' tweeted one.
Another told her, 'You have just SLAYED MY SOUL! The Dress, The Hair, THE GOLD, THE VOICE! You ARE GOLDEN! I love you!!!!'

Chart Moves: Mariah Carey's 'Triumphant' Makes Modest Start,
-- Mariah Carey: While the diva's new single "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" sells 23,000 downloads in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, that's not enough to generate a debut on the Hot 100.
Owed to both its modest sales and airplay, the cut misses out on becoming her 45th chart entry. It's the first taste of Carey's upcoming 14th studio album, set for release in March 2013. Though, the song's sales could jump in the coming weeks: she'll perform Sept. 5 on NBC's pregame show before the New York Giants/Dallas Cowboys football game.
The rap-heavy "Triumphant" (featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill) has had a relatively low-key promotional push by its label, Island Def Jam. So far it has only been serviced to rhythmic and urban radio stations. For the week ending Aug. 14, it garnered two million in radio audience from 77 monitored stations included in the Hot 100's radio panel (of more than 1,200 outlets).
While there are dance remixes of the song without Ross and Meek Mill -- which could be more suitable for top 40 airplay -- they have yet to be serviced to radio nor released digitally

Why Mariah Released 3 Versions of "Triumphant"
With latest single "Triumphant (Get 'Em)," Mariah Carey is offering something for everyone. During a Def Jam conference call with media on Aug. 2, the singer debuted a hip-hop version of the track featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill, while simultaneously releasing a "vintage throwback remix" and "pulse club mix" on her website, MariahCarey.com. Previewing the multiple versions of the single -- co-written and co-produced by Carey, Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox -- reveals the diversity of musical genres expected on her untitled 14th album, tentatively due in March 2013. According to Carey manager Randy Jackson, releasing the three different versions of "Triumphant" speaks to her ability to cater to multiple audiences and radio formats. "The vintage throwback mix will remind fans of remixes she did years ago, and she's had a lot of Billboard No. 1 dance hits as well," Jackson says. "She went in and re-sang the vocals, knowing that the two verses on this first version of this single with Meek and Ross were going to be hip-hop verses where people were rapping. We wanted to have something for all of her fans." The radio attack plan is multipronged as well. The single has already been released on YouTube in streaming format, having racked up almost 500,000 views since it was uploaded earlier this month. Island Def Jam plans to service the hip-hop version to R&B/hip-hop radio on Aug. 13, and is mapping out strategies to deliver other versions across dance formats. Releasing three versions has played to Carey's benefit. Some fans criticized the fact that Ross and Mill overshadow the singer on her own song and gravitated toward the club-geared mixes. "Most people probably don't understand this, but you always play to what's best for the song," Jackson says. "You don't go in and say, 'Wait a minute. I know they're rapping on these verses, but I need to be singing on these verses. Me, me, me.' It just turns out that way." For Carey, enlisting rappers for a single is nothing new. Since the onset of her career, she's collaborated with Jay-Z, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Busta Rhymes, adding hip-hop flavor to pop-leaning tracks. The choice to release three versions of "Triumphant" mirrors a similar strategy used for 2009 single "Obsessed," for which she shot two music videos: a solo edit and a remix featuring Gucci Mane. The original version of the cut peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the club remix later topped the Dance Club Songs chart, scoring a hit across formats. "Her idea with all her music is to get it out to her fans, and hopefully lift everyone's spirits a little bit," says Jackson, who notes that "Triumphant" was inspired by Carey's husband, Nick Cannon, and his struggle with kidney failure earlier this year. "It's really about having it succeed, and people are hearing it." In anticipation of the single's release, Carey has already shot a video directed by Cannon and set for release in the forthcoming weeks. She has a "big performance planned soon for television," and will appear in director Lee Daniels' upcoming film, "The Butler." Of course, she also recently cut a deal to serve as a judge on "American Idol" that's rumored to be worth $18 million. During the next few months, however, Jackson insists that completing the album is her main focus. "The album is going to be one of the great Mariah Carey albums," he says, "with a lot of stuff that you've come to love about her over the years." |

Mariah Carey Debuts Single; Talks Upcoming Album
Three years after the release of her last non-holiday full-length opus, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," Mariah Carey returns with her first single, "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill.
"Working with Ross and Meek on the same record was incredible," Mariah Carey told media on a conference call today (August 2). "Obviously Ross is a star and everybody loves him. I'm a fan of his music. I really, really wanted to work with him. I love the tone of his voice. I think the contrast of his voice and mine would be something special. I always like to do collaborations that people might think are different."
"Meek adds an excitement, a newness to the record that is pretty rare right now," Mariah continued.
"Triumphant," which Randy Jackson chimed in to say is "inspirational," is the first single off Mariah's 14th studio album. The singer touched on the untitled album while on the call. "I'm collaborating with a lot of my favorite people but the main thing is [that] I'm not trying to follow any particular trend," she said. "I want it to be well received. I want to stay true to myself and the music that I love and make the fans happy."
Mariah also spoke on how she felt of the current state of R&B and its mainstream cross-over, saying "It would be incredible if we can bring back the days where R&B songs didn't have to cross over. It makes me sad that there are so many talented R&B artists that don't get the chance that they should."

Exclusive: Mariah Carey Seeks To Revive R&B With New Album
Mariah Carey is a diva on a mission to revive the genres that she holds closest to her heart. During a special conference call with music industry leaders, including The Lava Lizard, the legendary singer exclusively revealed that her new album is a testament to the power of Hip-Hop and R&B in this era of Dance music.
While chatting about her goals with this new album, which is due in the fall, Carey noted that she misses the days of the 1970s and 1980s when music had meaning. However, unlike her younger peer Melanie Amaro, who mixed meaningful lyrics with Dance production in an effort to score a mainstream hit with ‘Don’t Fail Me Now’, Carey wants to achieve success on her own terms.
“It would be incredible if we could bring that days when R&B records didn’t have to crossover and just be hits on their own,” Carey stated with her signature milky voice. “I remember back when those records were the soundtracks of people’s lives.”
Yet, Carey isn’t sniping at her contemporaries who have made attempts to crossover. Rather, she simply wants struggling R&B artists to return to their former glory. “It makes me sad that there are so many great R&B artists out there that don’t get the chances that they should.”
Quite hilariously, Carey spoke about the pressures to conform to the Dance music trends that she faced while recording her still-untitled new album and politely rejected any ideas that she would sellout. “I recorded like 120-something songs,” she joked, “and I remember when I was pregnant with dem babies they only responded to the songs with the classic R&B feel.”
Carey does, however, have a few new ideas for her upcoming comeback album. Although she refused to name any performers because she didn’t want her material to be imitated, she did indicate that she finally got the chance to collaborate with artists with whom she had planned to work for many years.
Additionally, Carey positively responded to questions regarding the possibility of a duet with Drake or Frank Ocean and revealed her excitement to work with the “shapers” of the current industry. One such young artist is Meek Mill, and she nabbed a collaboration with him and Rick Ross for her new single, ‘Triumphant (Get ‘Em)’.
Several artists have been trying to revive the dying R&B genre but will Carey be the woman who I once predicted to save the genre? That remains to be seen but one thing is certain: she is determined to make her mark and open doors for the next generation.

Get Em, Get Em, Get Em (Go)

They told me get em, I got em,
I swear this word to my father
And the only way to make it to the top
If you go and get it from the bottom
And I ain't never asked for no hand outs
You won''t carry me, no Mariah
These haters love when I was dead broke
But they ain't made at me,
I'm on fire and I'm gon' burn
And I ain't gon’ learn,
I remember they said that it ain't my turn
But it ain't confirmed, then the tables turned
Just look at me now, try to hold me down
But I ain't gon' stop, cause I’m gon’ climb
To the mountain top, to the mountain top, now let go
Can’t fall down stay triumphant keep on living
Stay on your toes
Get off the ropes
Don’t let em ever count you out
Realize all things are possible
In your heart who’s the greatest
Reach for the stars
Be all that you are
And make em all fall down
Path that I choose flashing cameras as I pose
Throwing big money as she dances on the pole
Lime green Lamborghini dances in the road
License still suspended, no I never stop for tolls
Born slick talker, twice a week shopper
Blow a hundred wreck she don’t know a footlocker
Red bottom boss house big as Baltimore
With a blonde bombshell tryin to bomb with your boy
In the James Bond Beamer chrome wheel two seater
Smoking like Pimp C, spoken like a trill ni**a
On a cloudy day baby I can make it rain
Rubber band, 50 grand bet it brighten up your day
Came from humble beginnings
Then was Hummers and Benzes
Now it’s hundred and millions this is only the beginning
A don, a diva, the bomb achiever
The one believer, the game gets deeper
Can't fall down stay triumphant keep on living
Stay on your toes
Get off the ropes
Don’t let em ever count you out
Realize all things are possible
In your heart who's the greatest
Reach for the stars
Be all that you are

Get Em, Get Em, Get Em (Go)
Hit Em, Hit Em, Hit Em (Go)
Can’t fall down now, so even when clouds surround you
And everyone seems to doubt you
Baby still know who you are
So you gotta keep on climbing
In spite of the chains that bind you
You can see the mountain top
It’s not too far
Can’t fall down stay triumphant keep on living
Stay on your toes
Get off the rope
Don’t let em ever count you out
Realize all things are possible
In your heart who's the greatest
Reach for the stars
Be all that you are
And make em all fall down
Can’t fall down stay triumphant keep on living
(get em, get em, get em)
Stay on your toes get off the ropes
(stay on your toes)
Don’t let em ever count you out
(no, no, no, no)
(get em, get em, get em, get em go)
Realize all things are possible
In your heart who's the greatest
Reach for the stars
Be all that you are
And make em all fall down
Get Em, Get Em, Get Em (Go)
Hit Em, Hit Em, Hit Em (Go)
They told me get em, I got em,
I swear this word to my father
And the only way to make it to the top
If you go and get it from the bottom
And I ain't never asked for no hand outs
You won''t carry me, no Mariah
These haters love when I was dead broke
But they ain't made at me,
I'm on fire and I'm gon' burn
And I ain't gon’ learn,
I remember they said that it ain't my turn
But it ain't confirmed, then the tables turned
Just look at me now, try to hold me down
But I ain't gon' stop, cause I’m gon’ climb
To the mountain top, to the mountain top, now let go
Can’t fall down stay triumphant keep on living
Stay on your toes
Get off the ropes
Don’t let em ever count you out
Realize all things are possible
In your heart who’s the greatest
Reach for the stars
Be all that you are
And make em all fall down
Path that I choose flashing cameras as I pose
Throwing big money as she dances on the pole
Lime green Lamborghini dances in the road
License still suspended, no I never stop for tolls
Born slick talker, twice a week shopper
Blow a hundred wreck she don’t know a footlocker
Red bottom boss house big as Baltimore
With a blonde bombshell tryin to bomb with your boy
In the James Bond Beamer chrome wheel two seater
Smoking like Pimp C, spoken like a trill ni**a
On a cloudy day baby I can make it rain
Rubber band, 50 grand bet it brighten up your day
Came from humble beginnings
Then was Hummers and Benzes
Now it’s hundred and millions this is only the beginning
A don, a diva, the bomb achiever
The one believer, the game gets deeper
Can't fall down stay triumphant keep on living
Stay on your toes
Get off the ropes
Don’t let em ever count you out
Realize all things are possible
In your heart who's the greatest
Reach for the stars
Be all that you are
And make em all fall down
Get Em, Get Em, Get Em (Go)

Press Release: Mariah Carey's New Single "Triumphant"
--FOLLOWS UP ANNOUNCEMENT THAT SHE WILL JOIN JUDGES PANEL OF FOX's AMERICAN IDOL FOR 2013 SEASON --"TRIUMPHANT (GET 'EM)" IS FIRST ADVANCE SINGLE FROM UPCOMING NEW STUDIO ALBUM, DETAILS TO BE ANNOUNCED LATER THIS YEAR
NEW YORK, Aug. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Just days after the earth-shaking announcement that she will join the judges' panel of FOX's American Idol when the series returns in 2013, multi-platinum global superstar Mariah Carey announces the release of her first new single in more than two years, as "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" featuring [fellow Island Def Jam artist] Rick Ross and Meek Mill goes to radio Thursday, August 2nd, and goes up for sale at iTunes next Tuesday, August 7th.
As tweeted from @MariahCarey: "I wrote TRIUMPHANT when I was going through a difficult time & it helped me get through it. When u hear it, pay attention 2 the lyrics #WIN." "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" is the first advance single from five-time Grammy Award®-winner Mariah's 14th studio album, whose release will be announced in the months ahead.
Mariah, who boasts an unparalleled music catalog with #1 hits in multiple formats on the Billboard charts, will follow the original version of "Triumphant" with a set of exclusive, re-sung dance remixes produced by some of the hottest names in the dance world. Mariah, who continues a long-time tradition of re-inventing her songs in the format, said: "I've always had so much fun re-singing my songs for the club/dance mixes. It gives me the freedom to sing as powerfully as I want and to rewrite the songs specifically for the genre." Mariah has 15 #1 hits on Billboard's Dance Music/Club Play chart, including "Dreamlover," "Fantasy" and "Obsessed."
Her upcoming new album follows up Mariah's worldwide multi-million-selling Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel (released September 2009), her multi-platinum E=MC² (2008), and worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (2005).
Mariah's ongoing impact transcends the music industry and has left an indelible imprint upon the world at large. In 2009, she made a substantial mark in film with her critically acclaimed role as a social worker in Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire. A Congressional Award recipient, Mariah has generously donated time and energy to a range of domestic and international philanthropic causes near to her heart, including the Fresh Air Fund/Camp Mariah (a retreat where inner-city children explore career development), Save the Music Foundation, and Make-a-Wish Foundation, among several others.

Mariah Carey Scene Will Open “The Butler”
Exclusive: Lee Daniels’s “The Butler” started shooting yesterday in New Orleans. And there’s a lot of news I can tell you EXCLUSIVELY about this film starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. First of all, Quincy Jones has signed to compose the soundtrack. That’s a big big deal. And now I’ve heard that Daniels will film a scene for the opening of the film with Mariah Carey and Vanessa Redgrave far removed from the White House setting of the rest of the film. It sounds pretty cool, but I’ve been asked not to give it away.
Mariah is already said to be complaining about her makeup, which — as in “Precious”–she will be de-glamourized. And there’s more: because Liam Neeson is shooting Paul Haggis’s new film in Italy, he had to drop out of the role of Lyndon Johnson. So Liev Schreiber steps in. (The role of Lady Byrd is said to be minor.) And Olivia Washington, daughter of Denzel and Pauletta Washington, will make her screen debut as a civil rights activist. So far the only actress I’d like hear is in “The Butler” but isn’t is LaTanya Richardson. Lee–find her a role!
“The Butler” will be Daniels’ first PG-13 movie after more adult fare with “Monster’s Ball,” “Precious,” and “The Paperboy,” his wild new movie that opens this fall with an Oscar tipped performance by Nicole Kidman.

Mariah Carey, one of the best-selling female recording artists of all time, has joined AMERICAN IDOL as a new judge. A five-time Grammy Award-winning global superstar with more than 200 million records sold worldwide and more No. 1 songs than any solo artist in history, her 18 Billboard No. 1 singles (17 of which Carey wrote) rival all but The Beatles. Carey joins the judges' panel when AMERICAN IDOL returns in January 2013 on FOX.
"As a singer, songwriter and producer, it's going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with AMERICAN IDOL," said Mariah Carey. "I'm currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, 'Triumphant,' which will be out early next month. I can't wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon."
"We are proud to have one of the world's greatest-ever female singers join our show," said IDOL creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. "Mariah defines the word 'Idol' and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her."
"Mariah Carey is a global icon whose list of musical accomplishments is unprecedented," said Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO, FremantleMedia. "Having sold more than 200 million records worldwide, she's a true artist, ideally suited to identify and nurture AMERICAN IDOL's next great music superstars. We warmly welcome her to the IDOL family."
"Mariah Carey is the real deal. Not only is she one of the best-selling artists and performers on the planet and one of the world's most gifted vocalists, she also is a successful songwriter, record producer and actress," said Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. "She has a deep knowledge of music and a career insight that will make her a really amazing asset to our judges' table and to our contestants.
It's the dream of almost everyone who auditions for IDOL to sing like Mariah and we couldn't be happier to have her be part of the show."

Mariah Carey: New Single May Be Titled “Triumphant” to Mark “Idol” Deal
Exclusive: Well, I wrote this more than a week ago, but I’ll tell you again. Randy Jackson, the original “American Idol” judge, manages Mariah Carey. He’s also producing her new album. On Tuesday this past week, Randy flew out to the Hamptons by helicopter from New York to see Mariah for a couple of hours. He was in the city promoting his new line of watches for HSN, which debuted last night.
Randy is bringing Mariah to “Idol” to join him as a judge. It’s the perfect situation. They can finish their album, and Mariah can settle in for a couple of years, hopefully, as her twins are in their formative years. “Idol” will keep her close to home. Plus, when said allbum is released, it will give her an automatic platform from which to launch and promote it.
Now here’s the newest news: The first single from the album, I am told, is a song called “Triumphant.” When all the “Idol” contracts are signed, and the deal is finalized, both Randy and Mariah will be exactly that–Triumphant. And “American Idol” will be a fun show to watch again. Unlike Jennifer Lopez, Mariah can sing, sing, sing. No doubt we’ll hear a lot of warbling from the judges’ table.
Now we’ll have two members of the same family on competing reality-singing shows because Nick Cannon, Mariah’s hubby, host “America’s Got Talent.” The Carey-Cannons have talent, too!

Mariah Carey Finalizing Deal To Judge 'American Idol'
Mariah Carey's songs might officially be off-limits on "American Idol": The diva is reportedly finalizing her contract to become a judge on the singing competition.
According to Deadline, if Carey's deal goes through, she will earn more than $17 million for one season — eclipsing Britney Spears' reported $15 million paycheck for "X Factor."
After last week's "Idol" judging shakeup, which saw Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler head for the exits after two years on the job, Carey was one of the first names rumored to be in the running. The superstar's hubby, Nick Cannon, wasn't sure at the time whether "Idol" had deep enough pockets. "I don't know if they can afford Mariah Carey," Cannon told TMZ on Sunday. "That's a lot of money."
Well, looks like "Idol" might have come through. This isn't the first time Mimi has been rumored as the next "Idol" judge. In 2010, the songstress was reportedly considered for the 10th season after the show originally passed on J.Lo.
If Carey is officially onboard, one big question remains: Who will sit next to her? There's been no word so far about whether lone remaining judge Randy Jackson will stick around for season 12, but Us Weekly reported last week that he is considering a lateral move from judge to mentor on the show.
While everyone from Nicki Minaj to Katy Perry has been proposed as Carey's possible seatmates, one person has thrown her own name in the ring: Aretha Franklin. In an email to CNN, the 70-year-old Queen of Soul expressed some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for "Idol," saying she'd like to come onboard for the 12th season. And according to the news outlet, she wouldn't want to come alone, suggesting Patti LaBelle join her and "Idol" vet Jackson.

American Idol’s Randy Jackson: He’s seven tracks into a new album with Mariah Carey
Randy Jackson was in town today, on his way to St. Petersburg, Florida to premiere his line of watches on HSN this Friday at 10pm. The watches are beautifully designed by Randy, with Swiss movements and elegant boxes. He’s even made some automatic ones as well as quartz. I’ll tell you right now what he said about “American Idol”– he doesn’t know anything. He’s seven tracks into a new album with Mariah Carey, and saw her this week at her rented home in the Hamptons. We had lunch with a bunch of pretty fashion editors (and one other guy, from People). We talked music, mostly. He was horrified that I liked “Call Me Maybe.” Randy’s favorite group right now is the Alabama Shakes, from Athena, Alabama. We talked about Adele. I asked him if she could have won “American Idol” had she been on his show. “Absolutely,” he said. “There’s no one else like her.” We talked about “Idol” and all the famous past winners and contestants. Randy is very proud of the show. “Is there any other show where you can name so many of the winners and people who were on it?” he asked rhetorically, as the ten people at Hakkasan (yes, the London Hakkasan has opened on West 43rd St–I will be there a lot!) rattled off Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson–she didn’t win!, Fantasia, Chris Daughtry, and so on. Randy’s sending a watch to “Soul Man” Sam Moore, whose album, “Overnight Sensational,” he produced. And he’s waiting to see if he and Mariah are going to be “AI” judges, and what the future holds in store. But as I pointed out, he’s the heart of “Idol.” He’s the anchor. People will come and go, but he’s got to be there. The audience expects it. I think Fox gets that, too. Source:Showbizz411
Mariah to be honored as BMI icon
Mariah Carey will be honored as a BMI Icon at the BMI Urban Awards, scheduled for Friday, September 7 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Carey will join a group that includes the Jacksons, Snoop Dogg, George Clinton, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Little Richard, Al Green, the Bee Gees, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton -- selected because of their "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers." Over the years, Carey has co-written most of her biggest hits, a long list that includes 30 BMI Urban and Pop Award-winning songs such as "Always Be My Baby," "Hero," "Fantasy," "Vision of Love," "Emotions," "Shake It Off," "We Belong Together," "One Sweet Day," "I Don't Wanna Cry," "Dreamlover" and "All I Want for Christmas is You." A whopping 17 of her songs have amassed more than 1 million performances each, including "Always Be My Baby," "Dreamlover" and "Hero," which have each earned more than 3 million performances. Carey has scored more No. 1 singles than any other solo artist in history -- and is second only to the Beatles in the all-time list -- and holds the record for the female songwriter with the most Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles in the rock era, totaling 18. On March 1, just 10 months after giving birth to twins Moroccan and Monroe, a soulful and slender Carey returned to the stage with a 40-minute set at New York's Gotham Hall that included "Always Be My Baby," "We Belong Together," "I'll Be There" and "Obsessed." She released The Essential Mariah Carey on May 8 and is currently in the studio, writing and recording her next album for Island Def Jam. She is also rumored to be in "serious talks" to become a judge on "American Idol." Source: Billboard
ah Carey’s heartfelt tribute to Whitney Houston at BET awards
Mariah Carey stunned music fans at the BET Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night when she stepped up to lead a tribute to Whitney Houston, which featured performances by the late star’s grieving mother Cissy and Chaka Khan. The newly-blonde R&B superstar received a standing ovation at the Shrine Auditorium as she stepped up to the mic to offer her thoughts on the passing of her friend, who died in February. She said, “The first I heard Whitney’s voice I was mesmerized like the rest of the world. Just an unknown, budding singer myself, I was captivated by the power in her range, the richness of her tone and her unique ability to wrap a lyric in emotion. “We were backstage at the Grammy Awards and we exchanged glances; I was in awe, a tiny bit scared because, hello, there was a couple, a few rumors out there that we had some kind of rivalry, and one thing we all know is that Whitney was not to be toyed with. “We first worked together on Prince of Egypt, our Oscar-winning duet, and we got to spend a lot of time together… and we really got to know each other as people, not divas – OK, maybe, occasionally it did get a little diva-ish, but that was just for laughs.” Carey added, “She was a hilarious person with a cutting sense of humor, she was real and she kept it real and that’s why we got along so well… If you really knew Whitney you couldn’t help but love her.” The singer then fought to keep her composure as she recalled the last time she saw her late friend in London last year: “It was business as usual – laughter… and jokes galore. Even then folks were surprised to see us sitting right next to each other, clearly enjoying each other’s company.” She then choked back tears as she concluded, “I miss my friend. I miss hearing her voice in laughter, but we’ll always have the music. We’ll always have that voice we fell in love with.” Carey’s heartfelt speech made way for an uplifting BET Awards tribute performance featuring Monica, Brandy and Houston’s brother Gary, but it was gospel legend Cissy Houston who stole the show with an emotional rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Beyonce, who had dedicated her Best R&B Female Artist award to “my angel Whitney Houston” earlier in the evening, was one of many stars caught crying in the audience as Cissy Houston belted out the classic ballad. The lengthy tribute concluded with Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman,” which was also one of Whitney’s signature tunes. The late star’s acting career was then acknowledged by her Waiting to Exhale co-stars Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine. Houston was among many late stars who were the subjects of tributes at the ceremony – Nick Ashford, Donna Summer, Robin Gibb, Heavy D and Robin Gibb were also honored during brief musical interludes. Designer Diary: Designer Wilfredo Rosado's Postcard from Morocco, Capri, and Monte Carlo
Before launching his namesake fine-jewelry line, designer Wilfredo Rosado worked as fashion director at Armani. It was during his time there that he struck up a friendship with Mariah Carey while he helped dress her for events (circa 1990, the same year her debut album, Mariah Carey, was released). They remain friends, and recently Carey invited Rosado and a few other pals to join her on a get-away to Morocco, Capri, and Monte Carlo. Here, Rosado shares his trip exclusively with Style.com.

Nick Cannon: Twins Taking Their First Steps
While his wife Mariah Carey has been photographed vacationing in Capri, Monaco and Morocco with their 13-month old twins Moroccan and Monroe, Nick Cannon stuck around to take the reins behind the camera - directing his first feature film.
But, he admits, it's very hard being away from his family, especially now that the twins have recently taken their first steps.
"I try to not go seven days without seeing them. I'll be with them this weekend," Cannon, 31, tells PEOPLE from the Norwalk, Calif., movie set of School Dance, a coming-of-age comedy that he co-wrote and is also producing.
"They are taking steps and figuring it out, but I wouldn't say they are walking yet," he says. "I thought walking was, like, one day you stand and then you just start walking. I didn't know it was a process. There's a lot of falling. They take a few steps and then fall and go right back to crawling."
So which twin will master their unassisted waddle first? It's either's game, says Dad. "Roc can balance himself a lot better. He can stand and bounce without falling for a long time. But Monroe takes more steps than he does."
Happily, after battling kidney failure, blood clots and autoimmune disease, Cannon's health is back on track. "The doctor says I am cured," says the America's Got Talent host.
His new diet, which required him to cut out fried and processed foods, along with proper rest and a 30-45 minute daily boxing workout, is pumping him with much needed energy - to chase his twins around the house.
Not that it's been easy adhering to his diet. "I had some salt 'n vinegar chips for the first time a week ago," he admits. "I was like, 'Man, these things have never tasted so good.' "
Still, he's stayed pretty disciplined thanks to his wife, whom Cannon calls Dr. Carey. "She made sure I was eating what I was supposed to be eating, not overdoing it, resting, and following the doctors' orders."
Even so, there is one order he still refuses to follow. Carey wishes he'd stop boxing. "It's still a big secret," he says kiddingly about getting back into the ring. "Don't tell her."

Monroe and Moroccan Turn One – In Paris!
Nick Cannon certainly didn’t disappoint when he told PEOPLE that he and wife Mariah Carey were planning “something special” for the first birthday of their twins Moroccan and Monroe. Taking their little ones on a getaway to Paris, several close friends accompanied them to the Plaza Athénée on Sunday, where Cannon — in typical festive fashion — made sure a good time was had by all. The momentous occasion was complete with custom-made French pastries, lots of balloons, toys and confetti.

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon Renew Vows in Paris
They do – again!
Almost four years after their surprise wedding in the Bahamas, Nick Cannon got down on one knee before Mariah Carey in a reported vow renewal ceremony Friday night in Paris.
With the Eiffel Tower as a backdrop, Carey is seen in photos beaming in a stunning white mermaid dress with spaghetti straps and a black bow at the waist as Cannon, in a white suit and black tie, locks his eyes with hers.
The couple have much to celebrate beyond their four-year anniversary, which falls on Monday. Along with enjoying nearly 1-year-old twins, Cannon appears to be on the mend from frightening health problems, including kidney disease. After leaving the hospital in January, Cannon called Carey his "hero" and "the virtuous person who is my angel." Carey returned the compliment by telling him he was her "incredible husband" who, despite his struggles, was still "all strong and healthy and big."
The couple arrived in France by private jet around 1 a.m. Friday. During the day, Carey was spotted shopping at Baby Dior – the couple's twins turn 1 on Monday – and at the Louis Vuitton flagship store on the Champs-Elysees. Friday night, after they posed for their wedding renewal photos, the couple were spotted dining Le Jules Verne restaurant on the Eiffel Tower.

Mariah and Nick to Renew Vows in City of Lights
Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon are to renew their wedding vows in Paris this week. The couple are to celebrate four years of marriage at a romantic hotel with the Eiffel Tower as the backdrop on Friday evening. While they surprised fans by tying the knot in an intimate ceremony back in 2008, Mariah and Nick have opted for a far more public celebration this time round, inviting the press to capture the romantic moment. The couple will greet media at La Maison Blanche hotel in the romantic city following their vow renewals. The singing superstar and America's Got Talent host wed in secret at a private resort in the Bahamas on April 30, 2008. They had known each other for only a month after meeting on the set of her music video, and have defied critics with their lasting and clearly devoted relationship. At the time, the "Heartbreaker" singer said: "We really do feel we are soulmates. I never felt a love like this was in the cards for me." Their twins Moroccan and Monroe were born on their third wedding anniversary last year. So with the babies turning one on Monday, the extravagant family are set for a double celebration. Nick said they had something special planned while speaking to People magazine last week. "We're taking a break," he said. "It's going to be exciting. We're doing something special and something unique." It has been a trying few months for the couple, with Nick suffering kidney failure earlier this year. Source: UK Daily Mail

The 28 tracks on this double CD laid the foundation for five-time Grammy Award®-winner Mariah's reign as the top-selling female recording artist in history with over 200 million albums, singles and videos sold worldwide. THE ESSENTIAL MARIAH CAREY , which is an update of 2001's Greatest Hits with four different tracks, will be available everywhere starting May 8th through Columbia Records, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT. "I wanted to create a collection of some of my favorite songs," explains Mariah. "Several of them are very big hits and some are more obscure favorites of mine as well as fan faves." At the core of this set is the extraordinary run of early RIAA gold, platinum and multi-platinum Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit singles that kept her phenomenal vocal artistry at the forefront of pop music consciousness for that first decade. Fourteen of those chart-toppers are included here: •1990: "Vision Of Love," "Love Takes Time" •1991: "I Don't Wanna Cry," "Emotions" (included here in its 12-Inch Club Mix) •1992: "I'll Be There" (featuring Trey Lorenz) •1993: "Dreamlover," "Hero" •1995: "Fantasy," "One Sweet Day" (Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men) •1996: "Always Be My Baby" •1997: "Honey" •1998: "My All" •1999: "Heartbreaker" (featuring Jay-Z); "Thank God I Found You" (featuring Joe & 98 Degrees) Mariah Carey completists will appreciate that this ESSENTIAL contains four tracks newly chosen by Mariah herself for the occasion: •"Vanishing," Mariah's debut as a producer, from her self-titled debut album of 1990 •"Close My Eyes," a confessional track from the Butterfly album, evoking her new freedom as a single woman in 1997; •"The Roof (Mobb Deep Extended Version)," also from Butterfly, Mariah's first track with the songwriting-production duo Poke & Tone, aka the Trackmasters (Jean Claude Oliver and Samuel Barnes); •"Bliss," from her next album, 1998's Rainbow, one of six tracks on that album that were co-written and co-produced by Mariah with the Flyte Tyme Productions team of Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Big Jim Wright. In addition, Mariah has included two rare alternate remixes on this ESSENTIAL collection, both on disc one. "Emotions (12-inch Club Mix)," from 1991, the title track of Mariah's second studio album, is a remix of her record-setting fifth consecutive #1 hit single. "Anytime You Need A Friend (C + C Club Remix)," from her third studio album, 1993's Music Box, was remixed by her friends Robert Clivilles and David Cole of fellow Columbia Records group C + C Music Factory, who played such a crucial role as writers and producers on Mariah's early studio albums. Mariah Carey's Cinderella storybook signing to Columbia Records in 1990 is entwined with the magic of that decade. At the very outset, she accomplished what no other pop artist had done in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, sending her first five consecutive singles to the #1 spot. Indeed, eight of her first ten singles hit the #1 spot between 1990 and 1993, and the decade would see Mariah place 15 hits at the top of the Hot 100 through 1999. In 2005, Mariah earned her 17th #1 career single ("Don't Forget About Us"), tying one of the most enduring chart records in Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's. Three years later, Mariah surpassed Elvis with her 18th #1 Hot 100 hit ("Touch My Body"). Mariah is currently positioned as the only active recording artist in the 54 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits. Billboard: Happy Birthday Mariah Carey, Chart Icon
As Mariah Carey celebrates her 42nd birthday today, we've got the perfect present.
Here's a look back at the most notable chart records that Carey has set since she first graced a Billboard survey the week of June 2, 1990, when "Vision of Love" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
(We'd have gotten her a card, but it would've been too tough to list all her accomplishments on one).
With 18 Hot 100 leaders, Carey has totaled the most No. 1s by a female artist. Among all acts, she trails only the Beatles (20) for the most No. 1 songs in the chart's 53-year history.
Here is a listing of Carey's Hot 100 toppers:
1990, "Vision of Love" (four weeks at No. 1)
1990, "Love Takes Time" (three)
1991, "Someday" (two)
1991, "I Don't Wanna Cry" (two)
1991, "Emotions" (three)
1992, "I'll Be There" (two)
1993, "Dreamlover" (eight)
1993, "Hero" (four)
1995, "Fantasy" (eight)
1995, "One Sweet Day," with Boyz II Men (16)
1996, "Always Be My Baby" (two)
1997, "Honey" (three)
1998, "My All" (one)
1999, "Heartbreaker," featuring Jay-Z (two)
2000, "Thank God I Found You," featuring Joe & 98 Degrees (one)
2005, "We Belong Together" (14)
2005, "Don't Forget About Us" (two)
2008, "Touch My Body" (two)
Carey remains the only artist to send her first five Hot 100 entries to No. 1. She bested the mark of four consecutive career-opening leaders set by the Jackson 5 in 1970. The group's fourth No. 1, "I'll Be There," became Carey's sixth 22 years later.
Carey and the quintet were linked from the start: their second No. 1, "ABC," vaulted 14-6 on the Hot 100 the week after her birth.
With 16 weeks at No. 1, "One Sweet Day" holds the record for most weeks spent atop the Hot 100. Carey also ties for second-place with 14 weeks on top for "We Belong Together." (Boyz II Men, co-credited on "Day," boast a 14-week No. 1 of their own, 1994's "I'll Make Love to You".)
Carey has spent a record 79 weeks total atop the Hot 100. The Beatles are second with 59 cumulative frames in charge.
Considering the lengthy dominations of "Day" and "Together," it's not surprising that Carey claimed the top song of the '90s and '00s, respectively, when Billboard compiled the top titles of each decade.
Carey additionally earned the esteemed honor as Billboard's top artist of the '90s.
The superstar ranks as the best-selling female album artist dating to the advent of Nielsen SoundScan data in 1991. At 53.7 million, she trails only Garth Brooks (68.6 million) and the Beatles (63.5) among all artists.
Among women, Carey places ahead of Celine Dion (51.6), Shania Twain (34.1), Britney Spears (32.5) and Reba McEntire (30).
Carey is an artist for all seasons, as her 1994 carol "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is the most-downloaded holiday song, according to SoundScan. The song has sold 2.1 million downloads. No other seasonal track has passed even 1 million in digital sales.

Billboard: Mariah Carey Dazzles
Just 10 months after giving birth to twins Moroccan and Monroe, a soulful and slender ("30 lbs [less] on Jenny Craig," according to her rep) Mariah Carey returned to the stage with a set at New York's Gotham Hall on Thursday night (Mar. 1). The performance was part of Caesar's Entertainment's "Escape To Total Rewards" launch event, which also featured performances by Lil Wayne, Maroon 5, Sara Bareilles and other artists simulcast from cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and New Orleans.
Backed by a full band and four more-than-game backup dancers, Mimi strutted across the stage in a tight black dress and clutched a diamond-encrusted microphone over the course of her 40-minute set. In between triumphant renditions of hits like "Always Be My Baby," "We Belong Together," "I'll Be There" and "Obsessed," Carey gave a shout-out to her husband Nick Cannon, who was in the building; got her makeup touched up onstage by a crack team of cosmetic specialists; and spoke candidly about Moroccan and Monroe, whom she referred to as "dem babies."
"Do I bring dem babies out?... They should be in bed!" she told the crowd. "I really wanted to bring them here tonight, but Monroe is sometimes shy and takes a while to warm up to an audience."
Nostalgia has a way of tugging at one's chords, emotionally and vocally. Last night, Mariah Carey blinded her loyal fans of their inability to professionally sing and ignore the consideration of those around them, singing along as if in their own private shower stalls. The highlight of the night came at the end of the show when Carey closed her set with her ballad, "Hero." All, femmes and men, forgot of the morning after's vocal repercussions and sang along from the top of their lungs.
Before Carey strolled onstage, Sean "Diddy" Combs delivered a scattershot performance to the New York crowd, rollicking through songs like "All About the Benjamins," "Mo' Money Mo' Problems" and "Coming Home." Former Spice Girls member Melanie Brown was on hand to serve as emcee at Gotham Hall.

Mariah Carey on Whitney Houston's death: 'I'm almost incapable of talking about' it
Mariah Carey is still struggling to find the words to aptly express her sentiments on Whitney Houston's death.
"I'm almost incapable to talking about this still, I think we all are," she told Robin Roberts on "Good Morning America" Tuesday. "It's very heavy emotionally."
The diva, 41, explained that their careers, which both found meteoric rises in the '90s, may have been neck-and-neck, but the pair's friendship was something that went beyond the music charts.
"I don't think people could ever really understand our relationship," she said. "There was always this supposed rivalry in the beginning and then we did the duet and became friends.
"I saw her towards the end. I loved her. We all loved her and we were all inspired by her."
Carey and Houston famously recorded the hit "When You Believe" together in 1998.
The singer joined a number of other A-list celebrities - including Oprah Winfrey, Kevin Costner and Alicia Keys - last week for Houston's funeral services in New Jersey.
"It was such a class act the way she went out and the way her family dealt with it," she said of the "home-going" services. "It was beautiful."
Carey also addressed the health crisis that has been surrounding her own immediate family, with husband Nick Cannon's series of recent hospitalizations.
In early January, Cannon, 31, was treated for kidney failure while the couple was spending family time with their 9-month-old twins in Aspen, Colo. He was recently back in the hospital again for two blood clots found in his lungs and an enlarged ventricle on the right side of his heart.
"We didn't know how big a deal it was at that moment," she said of Cannon's health scare. "It was a gradual thing. We ended up in a couple hospitals this year already."
But Carey has no doubts that Cannon will bounce back just fine.
"The thing is, he's a young healthy person," she said. "It's about changing the lifestyle ... and just an awareness of what can really happen to you no matter how young or in great shape you are.
"I think, like he always does, he's going to turn something that happened into a positive thing."
