Mariah Carey Scene Will Open “The Butler”

Exclusive: Lee Daniels’s “The Butler” started shooting yesterday in New Orleans. And there’s a lot of news I can tell you EXCLUSIVELY about this film starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. First of all, Quincy Jones has signed to compose the soundtrack. That’s a big big deal. And now I’ve heard that Daniels will film a scene for the opening of the film with Mariah Carey and Vanessa Redgrave far removed from the White House setting of the rest of the film. It sounds pretty cool, but I’ve been asked not to give it away.

Mariah is already said to be complaining about her makeup, which — as in “Precious”–she will be de-glamourized. And there’s more: because Liam Neeson is shooting Paul Haggis’s new film in Italy, he had to drop out of the role of Lyndon Johnson. So Liev Schreiber steps in. (The role of Lady Byrd is said to be minor.) And Olivia Washington, daughter of Denzel and Pauletta Washington, will make her screen debut as a civil rights activist. So far the only actress I’d like hear is in “The Butler” but isn’t is LaTanya Richardson. Lee–find her a role!

“The Butler” will be Daniels’ first PG-13 movie after more adult fare with “Monster’s Ball,” “Precious,” and “The Paperboy,” his wild new movie that opens this fall with an Oscar tipped performance by Nicole Kidman.

PLATINUM-SELLING GLOBAL MEGASTAR MARIAH CAREY

Mariah Carey, one of the best-selling female recording artists of all time, has joined AMERICAN IDOL as a new judge. A five-time Grammy Award-winning global superstar with more than 200 million records sold worldwide and more No. 1 songs than any solo artist in history, her 18 Billboard No. 1 singles (17 of which Carey wrote) rival all but The Beatles. Carey joins the judges' panel when AMERICAN IDOL returns in January 2013 on FOX.

"As a singer, songwriter and producer, it's going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with AMERICAN IDOL," said Mariah Carey. "I'm currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, 'Triumphant,' which will be out early next month. I can't wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon."

"We are proud to have one of the world's greatest-ever female singers join our show," said IDOL creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. "Mariah defines the word 'Idol' and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her."

"Mariah Carey is a global icon whose list of musical accomplishments is unprecedented," said Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO, FremantleMedia. "Having sold more than 200 million records worldwide, she's a true artist, ideally suited to identify and nurture AMERICAN IDOL's next great music superstars. We warmly welcome her to the IDOL family."

"Mariah Carey is the real deal. Not only is she one of the best-selling artists and performers on the planet and one of the world's most gifted vocalists, she also is a successful songwriter, record producer and actress," said Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. "She has a deep knowledge of music and a career insight that will make her a really amazing asset to our judges' table and to our contestants.

It's the dream of almost everyone who auditions for IDOL to sing like Mariah and we couldn't be happier to have her be part of the show."

With a distinct five-octave vocal range, prolific songwriting and producing talent, Carey has defined the modern pop performance. As a singer/songwriter/producer, she has been recognized with five Grammy Awards, nine American Music Awards, Billboard's Artist of the Decade Award, the World Music Award for World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium and BMI's Icon Award, to name a few. She has two consecutive and unparalleled Billboard Song of the Decade titles: "One Sweet Day" (with Boyz II Men); and "We Belong Together," further marking her massive presence on the charts since her 1990 song debut "Vision of Love." Mariah became the second artist in history and the first female performer to have a song debut at No. 1 with "Fantasy" (1995), the groundbreaking collaboration with O.D.B. of the innovative rap group Wu-Tang Clan. Carey's original holiday classic, "All I Want For Christmas is You," redefined its place in pop culture as one of the greatest holiday hits of all time when it reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 2011, 17 years after its debut. Carey's influential and stellar contribution to the music industry spans multiple genres and is showcased through a multifaceted hit catalogue as well as a long list of diverse collaborations.

Carey's ongoing impact transcends the music industry and has left an indelible imprint upon the world at large. She recently made a substantial mark in film with her critically acclaimed role as a social worker in Precious, the 2009 film based on the novel Push, by Sapphire. A Congressional Award recipient, Carey has generously donated her time and energy to a range of domestic and international philanthropic causes near to her heart, including The Fresh Air Fund/Camp Mariah (a retreat where inner-city children explore career development), Save the Music Foundation and Make-a-Wish Foundation, among several others.

Carey is currently in the studio, writing, recording and executive-producing her next album for Island Def Jam Music Group, with the lead single, "Triumphant."

AMERICAN IDOL has been the No. 1 entertainment program among Total Viewers for the past nine consecutive seasons. To date, IDOL alums have produced 349 No. 1 Billboard hits and garnered nearly 250 million iTunes downloads. Last year, Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery released his debut album, Clear As Day, which dominated the Billboard Country Albums chart and has gone platinum, selling more than one million copies. Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips' first single, "Home," which was released May 23, has been certified gold.

Mariah Carey Taps Rick Ross and Meek Mill for New Single ‘Triumphant’

Mariah Carey is joining forces with Maybach Music Group. The pop diva has collaborated with Rick Ross and Meek Mill on her new single “Triumphant (Get ‘Em).”

The record, which was produced by Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox, will premiere early next month. Mariah linked up with Ross in April in Miami, and photos from their studio session surfaced online.

She took to Twitter to announce the news to her excited Lambs. “So I can finally announce to you that my new single is coming out early August!” tweeted Mariah. “It’s called TRIUMPHANT (Get ‘Em) ft. Rick Ross & Meek Mill.”

The singer, who will be honored at the BMI Urban Awards in September, penned the track during a tumultuous time. “I wrote TRIUMPHANT when I was going through a difficult time & it helped me get through it,” she said. “When u hear it, pay attention 2 the lyrics #WIN.”

Mariah previously collaborated with Rozay on the remix to her 2008 hit “Touch My Body” and is working on her 13th album, her first since giving birth to twins Monroe and Moroccan in April 2011.

Mariah Carey: New Single May Be Titled “Triumphant” to Mark “Idol” Deal

Exclusive: Well, I wrote this more than a week ago, but I’ll tell you again. Randy Jackson, the original “American Idol” judge, manages Mariah Carey. He’s also producing her new album. On Tuesday this past week, Randy flew out to the Hamptons by helicopter from New York to see Mariah for a couple of hours. He was in the city promoting his new line of watches for HSN, which debuted last night.

Randy is bringing Mariah to “Idol” to join him as a judge. It’s the perfect situation. They can finish their album, and Mariah can settle in for a couple of years, hopefully, as her twins are in their formative years. “Idol” will keep her close to home. Plus, when said allbum is released, it will give her an automatic platform from which to launch and promote it.

Now here’s the newest news: The first single from the album, I am told, is a song called “Triumphant.” When all the “Idol” contracts are signed, and the deal is finalized, both Randy and Mariah will be exactly that–Triumphant. And “American Idol” will be a fun show to watch again. Unlike Jennifer Lopez, Mariah can sing, sing, sing. No doubt we’ll hear a lot of warbling from the judges’ table.

Now we’ll have two members of the same family on competing reality-singing shows because Nick Cannon, Mariah’s hubby, host “America’s Got Talent.” The Carey-Cannons have talent, too!

Mariah Carey Finalizing Deal To Judge 'American Idol'

Mariah Carey's songs might officially be off-limits on "American Idol": The diva is reportedly finalizing her contract to become a judge on the singing competition.

According to Deadline, if Carey's deal goes through, she will earn more than $17 million for one season — eclipsing Britney Spears' reported $15 million paycheck for "X Factor."

After last week's "Idol" judging shakeup, which saw Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler head for the exits after two years on the job, Carey was one of the first names rumored to be in the running. The superstar's hubby, Nick Cannon, wasn't sure at the time whether "Idol" had deep enough pockets. "I don't know if they can afford Mariah Carey," Cannon told TMZ on Sunday. "That's a lot of money."

Well, looks like "Idol" might have come through. This isn't the first time Mimi has been rumored as the next "Idol" judge. In 2010, the songstress was reportedly considered for the 10th season after the show originally passed on J.Lo.

If Carey is officially onboard, one big question remains: Who will sit next to her? There's been no word so far about whether lone remaining judge Randy Jackson will stick around for season 12, but Us Weekly reported last week that he is considering a lateral move from judge to mentor on the show.

While everyone from Nicki Minaj to Katy Perry has been proposed as Carey's possible seatmates, one person has thrown her own name in the ring: Aretha Franklin. In an email to CNN, the 70-year-old Queen of Soul expressed some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for "Idol," saying she'd like to come onboard for the 12th season. And according to the news outlet, she wouldn't want to come alone, suggesting Patti LaBelle join her and "Idol" vet Jackson.

American Idol’s Randy Jackson: He’s seven tracks into a new album with Mariah Carey

Randy Jackson was in town today, on his way to St. Petersburg, Florida to premiere his line of watches on HSN this Friday at 10pm. The watches are beautifully designed by Randy, with Swiss movements and elegant boxes. He’s even made some automatic ones as well as quartz. I’ll tell you right now what he said about “American Idol”– he doesn’t know anything. He’s seven tracks into a new album with Mariah Carey, and saw her this week at her rented home in the Hamptons. We had lunch with a bunch of pretty fashion editors (and one other guy, from People). We talked music, mostly. He was horrified that I liked “Call Me Maybe.” Randy’s favorite group right now is the Alabama Shakes, from Athena, Alabama. We talked about Adele. I asked him if she could have won “American Idol” had she been on his show. “Absolutely,” he said. “There’s no one else like her.” We talked about “Idol” and all the famous past winners and contestants. Randy is very proud of the show. “Is there any other show where you can name so many of the winners and people who were on it?” he asked rhetorically, as the ten people at Hakkasan (yes, the London Hakkasan has opened on West 43rd St–I will be there a lot!) rattled off Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson–she didn’t win!, Fantasia, Chris Daughtry, and so on. Randy’s sending a watch to “Soul Man” Sam Moore, whose album, “Overnight Sensational,” he produced. And he’s waiting to see if he and Mariah are going to be “AI” judges, and what the future holds in store. But as I pointed out, he’s the heart of “Idol.” He’s the anchor. People will come and go, but he’s got to be there. The audience expects it. I think Fox gets that, too. Source:Showbizz411

Mariah to be honored as BMI icon

Mariah Carey will be honored as a BMI Icon at the BMI Urban Awards, scheduled for Friday, September 7 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Carey will join a group that includes the Jacksons, Snoop Dogg, George Clinton, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Little Richard, Al Green, the Bee Gees, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton -- selected because of their "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers." Over the years, Carey has co-written most of her biggest hits, a long list that includes 30 BMI Urban and Pop Award-winning songs such as "Always Be My Baby," "Hero," "Fantasy," "Vision of Love," "Emotions," "Shake It Off," "We Belong Together," "One Sweet Day," "I Don't Wanna Cry," "Dreamlover" and "All I Want for Christmas is You." A whopping 17 of her songs have amassed more than 1 million performances each, including "Always Be My Baby," "Dreamlover" and "Hero," which have each earned more than 3 million performances. Carey has scored more No. 1 singles than any other solo artist in history -- and is second only to the Beatles in the all-time list -- and holds the record for the female songwriter with the most Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles in the rock era, totaling 18. On March 1, just 10 months after giving birth to twins Moroccan and Monroe, a soulful and slender Carey returned to the stage with a 40-minute set at New York's Gotham Hall that included "Always Be My Baby," "We Belong Together," "I'll Be There" and "Obsessed." She released The Essential Mariah Carey on May 8 and is currently in the studio, writing and recording her next album for Island Def Jam. She is also rumored to be in "serious talks" to become a judge on "American Idol." Source: Billboard

ah Carey’s heartfelt tribute to Whitney Houston at BET awards

Mariah Carey stunned music fans at the BET Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night when she stepped up to lead a tribute to Whitney Houston, which featured performances by the late star’s grieving mother Cissy and Chaka Khan. The newly-blonde R&B superstar received a standing ovation at the Shrine Auditorium as she stepped up to the mic to offer her thoughts on the passing of her friend, who died in February. She said, “The first I heard Whitney’s voice I was mesmerized like the rest of the world. Just an unknown, budding singer myself, I was captivated by the power in her range, the richness of her tone and her unique ability to wrap a lyric in emotion. “We were backstage at the Grammy Awards and we exchanged glances; I was in awe, a tiny bit scared because, hello, there was a couple, a few rumors out there that we had some kind of rivalry, and one thing we all know is that Whitney was not to be toyed with. “We first worked together on Prince of Egypt, our Oscar-winning duet, and we got to spend a lot of time together… and we really got to know each other as people, not divas – OK, maybe, occasionally it did get a little diva-ish, but that was just for laughs.” Carey added, “She was a hilarious person with a cutting sense of humor, she was real and she kept it real and that’s why we got along so well… If you really knew Whitney you couldn’t help but love her.” The singer then fought to keep her composure as she recalled the last time she saw her late friend in London last year: “It was business as usual – laughter… and jokes galore. Even then folks were surprised to see us sitting right next to each other, clearly enjoying each other’s company.” She then choked back tears as she concluded, “I miss my friend. I miss hearing her voice in laughter, but we’ll always have the music. We’ll always have that voice we fell in love with.” Carey’s heartfelt speech made way for an uplifting BET Awards tribute performance featuring Monica, Brandy and Houston’s brother Gary, but it was gospel legend Cissy Houston who stole the show with an emotional rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Beyonce, who had dedicated her Best R&B Female Artist award to “my angel Whitney Houston” earlier in the evening, was one of many stars caught crying in the audience as Cissy Houston belted out the classic ballad. The lengthy tribute concluded with Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman,” which was also one of Whitney’s signature tunes. The late star’s acting career was then acknowledged by her Waiting to Exhale co-stars Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine. Houston was among many late stars who were the subjects of tributes at the ceremony – Nick Ashford, Donna Summer, Robin Gibb, Heavy D and Robin Gibb were also honored during brief musical interludes.
